About the museum
The Muzeum Susch was founded by the Polish entrepreneur and art collector Grażyna Kulczyk and opened on 2 January 2019. In Susch in the Lower Engadine she acquired a medieval monastery building and several neighbouring Engadine houses and had them converted into a museum by the architects Chasper Schmidlin and Lukas Voellmy. The complex once belonged to a monastery founded in 1157 at the Flüela Pass on the pilgrimage route; in the 19th century a brewery was added, standing above a natural mountain spring.
Because all the buildings are listed, the additional rooms were created by excavating the mountain: more than 9,000 tonnes of rock, mainly amphibolite, were blasted out. Today an underground passage connects the old and the new brewery; the exhibition spaces extend over around 1,500 square metres across several floors, partly with exposed rock. The brewery's former ice tower houses a large steel sculpture by Monika Sosnowska.
The museum sees itself as a place of debate on the model of a Kunsthalle and particularly, though not exclusively, supports women artists whose work was long overlooked. Alongside changing exhibitions, permanent site-specific installations by international artists shape the museum. It also includes an institute for research on women artists, a residency programme (Temporars Susch), a dance and performance programme (Acziun Susch), concerts and an affiliated bistro. The operator is the foundation Art Stations Foundation CH.
