About the museum
The Nähmaschinenmuseum in Chur goes back to the collection of sewing machine mechanic Bernd Pittermann, who runs a specialist shop for Pfaff sewing machines in Chur. Over the years he gathered around 300 historical machines, of which the museum shows around 120 selected pieces of different brands and countries of origin.
The exhibition follows the development of the sewing machine mainly between 1871 and 1940. On display are hand-operated sewing machines, treadle and table models, electric machines and children's sewing machines, as well as a few industrial sewing machines. Historical accessories, photos and advertising posters complement the collection; among the rare pieces is a machine from the Berlin company Loewe. All machines are in working order, and some may be tried out.
The museum is located on Pulvermühlestrasse, on the grounds of the animal and leisure park by the historic Pulvermühle. School classes, women's clubs and technically interested visitors are welcome; visits are possible by appointment.
