About the museum
The Ortsmuseum of the municipality of Andwil has existed since 1991 and is housed in the former Bürgerheim. The idea of a village museum was taken up in 1986: at that time the citizens’ assembly approved a credit of CHF 380,000 for the municipal council to fit out a further apartment in the former Bürgerheim and provide rooms for the museum. After extensive preparatory and set-up work, it was inaugurated in 1991. It is run by the Ortsmuseumskommission (village museum commission).
The house offers four floors for the exhibition. In the basement stands a functioning 1:5 scale mill model by Leonhard Lehmann, with a grain mill, sawmill and bone crusher. On the first upper floor the museum shows peat cutting and agriculture in Andwil; in the attic it shows domestic culture from earlier times, two old Karzer (small lock-up cells), tools, historic cheese-making equipment and a shoemaker’s workshop. The ground floor is reserved for exhibitions that change every year.
