About the museum
The Ortsmuseum Dietikon opened in 1978 and is run by the Stadtverein Dietikon, which was founded in 1913 as a tourist board. It is looked after by the Commission for Local History, whose members design the exhibitions, lead tours and take care of the photo archive, the collection, the storage depot and the local and press chronicle.
The museum on Schöneggstrasse shows the history of Dietikon from Roman times to the 20th century. In the Roman room, finds recall the Roman estate of Dietikon, and in the cellar stands a fully preserved tiled stove from 1832. One focus is the crossing of the Limmat by the French troops under General Masséna in 1799, which is presented in a permanent exhibition. Another theme is the Second World War: Dietikon was then built up into a fortress with a concrete wall and bunkers. A model of the core fortification shows this complex; parts of the surviving military structures of the Limmat Line can be visited on tours.
In addition to the permanent themes, there are changing exhibitions on village and trade history; the museum is open on Sundays only and is run by volunteers.
