About the museum

The museum was founded by Abbé Étienne Bilger, a priest passionate about his region, who wanted to save the objects and customs of the past. It is presented as an annex of the Musée historique de Mulhouse and occupies a restored former farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century and later remodeled. Some walls have been exposed to show the half-timbered construction.

The collections depict the lives of farmers in the Sundgau at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, around crafts, domestic life, farm life and religious life. On the first floor, a room heated by a tiled stove displays kerosene lamps, locks, religious objects, embroidery, irons, clothing and prehistoric tools found around Oltingue. The kitchen and back kitchen show everyday utensils, bread-making and laundry washing.

Upstairs, five rooms display faience tiles, objects related to milk and flour, cake and kougelhopf molds, grain measures and a bedroom with the “coin du Bon Dieu”, a traditional devotional corner. The barn houses the workshops of the blacksmith, the wheelwright and the saddler-harness maker.
