About the museum

The Ortsmuseum Muttenz has existed since 1972 and is run by the municipality as part of the Museen Muttenz. It is housed in the attic of the Feuerwehrmagazin on Schulstrasse, near the Breite school building.

The entrance area is about village club life: selected objects and historical banners show the role the large village clubs played. The rest of the exhibition traces local history from the Stone Age to the end of the 20th century, with original archaeological finds, models, short films and reconstructions, including the three Wartenberg castles. A growing picture show of historical photos rounds out the tour.

A second room is dedicated to Karl Jauslin (1842 to 1904), the history painter and illustrator from Muttenz. His “Bilder aus der Schweizergeschichte” (Pictures from Swiss History) shaped the view of Swiss history for generations of Swiss people into the 1980s. The permanent exhibition shows the life and work of the artist.
