About the museum

The Stoffelhaus stands on the Obergass in the small town of Fürstenau in the Domleschg, which likes to call itself the smallest town in the world. Wall paintings from around 1400 have survived in the house. They are among the rare secular paintings of the High Gothic period in Graubünden; comparable secular paintings in the canton survive only at Brandis Castle in Maienfeld and at Rhäzüns Castle.

The best-known image shows a courtly stag hunt and gives an impression of how courtly life was cultivated in the then episcopal Fürstenau. Fragments of a scene from the Old Testament also survive: Samson fighting the lion. Further fragments show farmers, cows and a flock of sheep, presumably depicting a cattle raid.

The museum is run by the foundation “Talmuseum Domleschg, Stiftung Johann Martin v. Planta”, based in the Stoffelhaus. Its aim is to operate a museum for the Domleschg region and to hold cultural events in the Stoffelhaus, in order to preserve and enliven the cultural life of the valley. A visit can be combined with a guided walk through Fürstenau.
