About the museum
The Tgea da Schons stands in Zillis on the way to the church of St. Martin with its famous Romanesque painted ceiling. The building is a typical Central Graubünden farmhouse from 1580, with direct access to the attached stable and barn. Since 1970 the Talmuseum des Schams (Romansh: Val Schons) has been housed here.
The exhibits come mostly from the valley and tell of living and working in earlier times. The cellar rooms and storerooms hold devices for processing milk and meat; the living rooms contain furniture, textiles, old views of the valley, minerals and church antiquities; the kitchen has cooking and tableware. Tools in the threshing floor illustrate fieldwork and the craft of joinery.
In 2023 the house passed to the newly founded Stiftung Tgea da Schons. It aims to develop the Talmuseum into a cultural meeting place for the Val Schons: in future, the exhibition on the church ceiling of Zillis, a space for seminars and events, and a café are to find room here too. For the conversion and extension of the stable and barn, a jury selected the project “Laterne” by Ahadi & Crameri Architekten in 2024; the inauguration is targeted for 2027.
