About the museum

In 1918 the Schams district bought the Susta opposite the Pension Conrad in Zillis in order to set up a mill there. The electrically driven mill from the firm Ammann of Langenthal, with an attached barley-hulling mill, ran from 1919 to 1968. In 2014 the last Schams Landsgemeinde sold the building.

In the machine room, alongside the mill equipment, stand a barley-crushing machine by the firm Bucher of Niederweningen from 1940 and a steel machine by the firm F. Neuhaus of Eberswalde from the 1930s. The historic machines no longer run, but they are impressive testimonies to industrial design and can be viewed.

The Kreismühle also houses the exhibition s-cultura.ch with sculptures by Not Bott. The wood sculptor, born in 1927 in Valchava and died in 1998 in Poschiavo, created an extensive body of work, including works in arolla pine (Arvenholz) and art integrated into buildings. The Kreismühle is open from May to October on the first Saturday of each month, otherwise by telephone appointment; admission is free.
