About the museum
The 95th Bomb Group Hospital Museum occupies the former hospital buildings that served the US Eighth Air Force's 95th Bomb Group, which flew B-17 Flying Fortresses from nearby Horham airfield between 1943 and 1945. The group flew hundreds of missions, including the first American daylight raid on Berlin, and its hospital looked after the airmen on the base.
After the war the hospital buildings passed into farm use. They were chicken sheds, then a pig unit and a grain store, and finally a mushroom farm for eighteen years. Tony and Val Albrow bought them from a local farmer with the aim of restoring them as a museum dedicated to the 95th Bomb Group. The restoration took about ten years and was paid for privately.
Work on the buildings is still continuing, but fourteen of the fifteen rooms are open to visitors. Some rooms have been returned to their wartime condition, as though the 95th were still operating, while others hold displays and exhibits. The site also has military vehicles on show and a tea room on open days. The hospital stands beside Redlingfield Wood in the parish of Denham and is a memorial to those who served with the group. The museum is separate from the Red Feather Club museum at Horham, which is run by the 95th Bomb Group Heritage Association.
