About the museum
A local jeweller, George Moss, left £1,000 in his will for a museum in Diss. The Antiquarian Society and the local community took up the challenge, and the museum first opened to the public in 1975 after the building had been renovated and redecorated, with the work paid for by the Diss Express.
The museum is housed in The Shambles, a former butcher's shop that was part of the old meat market in the centre of the marketplace. Butchers' hooks can still be seen through a glass panel in the ceiling. In 1993 the museum took over the florist's shop next door as its collection grew, but it is still only two rooms.
The displays show objects and photographs about the past of Diss, with permanent exhibits such as a doll's house and changing displays each season. Thousands more objects are in storage, and some are shown online. The museum is run by volunteer stewards and trustees as a registered charity.
