About the museum
The Carriage and Costume Museum belongs to the Blessingbourne Estate near Fivemiletown in County Tyrone. It grew out of the hobby of Captain Robert Lowry, who inherited the estate from Peter Montgomery and collected vintage transport. The collection is now looked after by his son Nicholas Lowry and his wife Colleen, who own the estate.
The estate itself goes back to the Montgomery family in the early 18th century. The present Elizabethan-style manor house was built between 1871 and 1874 to designs by Pepys Cockerell, and the Victorian rock garden was laid out under the Montgomerys. During the Second World War American artillery units were stationed at Blessingbourne.
The museum shows horse-drawn carriages, coaches, buggies and penny-farthings, along with a Romany caravan, old horse-drawn farm machinery and a United Nations helicopter transport. One highlight is an 1825 London to Oxford stagecoach once owned by the circus owner Bertram W. Mills. Family military items, Victorian costumes and household ephemera show how people lived and worked on the estate.
