About the museum
The Uig Museum is run by Comunn Eachdraidh Ùig, the Uig Historical Society, a community group founded in 1984 for the Uig district in the west of the Isle of Lewis, from Scaliscro to Breanish. The area includes the sands at Uig, where the famous Lewis Chessmen are thought to have been found.
The society was first housed in the former Lochcroistean School, which is now a Gaelic arts centre. In 1998 it moved into the new Uig Community Centre overlooking Timsgarry and Uig Sands, where the museum and archive can be visited. It is a registered museum run on a voluntary basis.
The displays show domestic and crofting life with everyday objects, photographs and maps, a re-created blackhouse kitchen from about 1919 and a timeline running from the Stone Age to the outbreak of the First World War. Information boards describe local crafts and the Lewis Chessmen. The society also keeps an archive of genealogies, oral histories, croft histories, school registers and photographs, much of it available online through the Hebridean Connections project.
