About the museum
Tredegar Museum is a small local history museum run by volunteers from the town. It was started in the 1970s by the Tredegar Historical Society, with founder member Oliver Jones, a local historian who wrote about the early days of Sirhowy and Tredegar.
Today the museum is managed by the Tredegar History and Archive Society and is based in Tredegar Library on The Circle, beside the town clock. Its displays use objects from the daily life and industry of this former ironworking town. Tredegar is also the town where the Medical Aid Society was formed, which Aneurin Bevan later drew on when the National Health Service was created.
Volunteers staff the museum and give guided tours, and visitors can talk to society members about the town and its past. The society also holds meetings at the library on Wednesday afternoons.
