About the museum
Buckhaven Museum was a small free museum next to the library in the centre of the town, and it told the story of the community's industrial and social past. Its Working Lives display followed the town's development from a fishing village into a mining town, and a replica 1920s kitchen showed how cooking has changed over the past century.
Buckhaven had one of the largest fishing fleets in Scotland in the early 19th century, and coal mining took over in the 1860s. Old photographs in the museum showed a beach that coal waste later damaged and a harbour that the waste silted up.
The museum is closed until further notice because of urgent repairs to the building. Its objects have been returned to the Fife Collections Centre in Glenrothes, where they can be seen by appointment, and a small Buckhaven display is shown at Methil Heritage Centre.
