About the museum
The Scottish Witch Trial Museum opened in Leven in Fife in September 2024. It was set up by the local historian and curator Leonard Low with part-funding from the Scottish Coalfields Regeneration Trust, and is described as the first museum dedicated to the history of the Scottish witch trials. It occupies a former diner on Mitchell Street.
The displays cover the 173 years of witch hunts in Scotland and tell the stories of both the accused and the accusers. Cases from places including Bargarran, Pittenweem, St Monans, Largo, North Berwick and Paisley are presented. Objects on show include instruments of punishment such as a scold's bridle, an iron muzzle that was used to silence women.
