About the museum

Fife Heritage Railway is the trading name of the Kingdom of Fife Railway Preservation Society. Its roots go back to the Lochty Private Railway, which ran in Fife from 1967 and closed in May 1992. After the closure the society stored its locomotives and rolling stock at Methil Power Station and later moved them to Kirkland Yard in Leven.

The society acquired the Kirkland Yard site in 2001, and it has been open to the public since 2008. The site has a half-mile running line, a workshop called the Colin Munro Shed and a restoration shed. A new exhibition hall is being built and the society is raising funds to finish it.

The fleet consists mainly of small industrial locomotives from collieries, power stations, a distillery and a dockyard, including Ruston and Hornsby diesels and the Andrew Barclay steam locomotive Forth, built in 1926. Some locomotives are operational and others are being restored. Visitors can see work in progress on site tours and can ride the trains on running days and special events.
