About the museum

The Bure Valley Railway follows the route of a main-line branch that the Great Eastern Railway opened between Wroxham and Aylsham on 1 January 1880. The line served rural communities for more than a century, but buses took most of the passengers and British Railways withdrew the passenger service on 15 September 1952. Freight continued, including grain and, until the early 1980s, concrete beams, and British Rail closed the line on 6 January 1982; the track was lifted in 1984.

The story did not end there. Norfolk County Council wanted to turn disused railways into traffic-free long-distance paths, and Broadland District Council bought the Aylsham to Wroxham section. Several councillors and officers were railway enthusiasts, so they proposed building a narrow-gauge railway alongside the footpath, which needed only half the width of the old trackbed. Construction began on 8 May 1989 and the line opened on 10 July 1990, at first with locomotives hired from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway.

The early years were unstable, with five owners in ten years. In 2001 a group of railway enthusiasts bought the line, and since then profits have been reinvested in locomotives, carriages, infrastructure and visitor facilities. The railway now carries around 120,000 passengers a year, and its steam fleet includes No. 1 Wroxham Broad, built in 1964 and rebuilt as a steam locomotive in 1992, and several locomotives built for the line in the 1990s. At Aylsham station there is a small heritage exhibition and the engineering workshop and turntable can be seen.
