About the museum
The North Walsham Heritage Group held a temporary exhibition in St Nicholas Church in 2017, and its success led the group to look for a permanent home. For decades local groups had hoped for a heritage centre in the town. The Town Council leased the Saddlers Rooms on Vicarage Street as the permanent base of its Information Centre, and the former meeting room became the Heritage Centre.
In March 2018 the group received a grant of £4,767 from the Wensum and Coast Local Action Group, funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, which paid for display cabinets and equipment. The centre is part of “Mi North Walsham” together with the Information Centre and is run entirely by volunteers.
The displays use models, artefacts and information boards to tell the story of the town and its surroundings. The oldest exhibit is the Newsham fire pump, built around 1725. The centre accepts donations of local objects, documents and photographs.
