About the museum
Bute Museum is run by the Bute Museum and Natural History Society, a registered charity that looks after the museum, its collections and a long series of published research. The society has produced a volume of Transactions since 1907-1908, along with trail booklets and books about the island.
The museum stands in Stuart Street in Rothesay and is organised around two main galleries. The Natural History Gallery covers the island's geology and landscape, plants and animals, and the society's members keep checklists of local birds, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies and other wildlife.
The Archaeology and History Gallery follows Bute from the Mesolithic period to the twentieth century. It shows flint tools, Neolithic pottery, Bronze Age burial goods and finds from the Iron Age fort at Dunagoil, as well as early Christian carved stones and Viking and medieval objects. Later displays cover Victorian holidays, the cotton mills, fishing, and the island's part in wartime, including a bell from HMS Varbel.
