About the museum
Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute is the home of the Marquesses of Bute. A house was built here from 1719, but a fire in 1877 destroyed much of it. Most of the contents survived, along with the Georgian wings, and these were kept as part of the new house built by the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late nineteenth century. The result is a striking mix of Victorian design and earlier Georgian architecture.
The interiors are known for their rich detail and for ideas drawn from astrology, art and mythology. A map of the stars decorates the ceiling of the Marble Hall, and the house contained early innovations such as a telephone system and a Victorian passenger lift. Visitors walk through the principal rooms, including the Drawing Room, Dining Room, Purple Library and Marble Chapel, and guides in several rooms share stories about the Bute family and the objects of the Bute Collection.
The grounds cover about 300 acres of gardens and woodland that run down to the shore of the Firth of Clyde. They include a rock garden designed by the Victorian landscape architect Thomas Mawson, an arboretum, the Kitchen Garden, the Wee Garden and pinetums with more than 800 conifers. The house, gardens, Courtyard Cafe and shops are open in the summer season, and the house is run by the charity Mount Stuart Trust, which also offers private tours, weddings and self-catering accommodation on the estate.
