About the museum
The museum is run by volunteers of the Largs and District Historical Society, a Scottish charity that promotes interest in the history of Largs, Fairlie and Skelmorlie. It is in Kirkgate House on Manse Court, just off Main Street. The society wants the museum’s records and objects to be open to everyone and therefore aims always to keep admission free.
The museum holds a wide range of artefacts and archive material about the area, and visitors can research local and family connections. In the old churchyard next door stands the Skelmorlie Aisle, built in the 1600s, which can be seen when the museum is open or by prior arrangement. Volunteers also offer tours of the Old Graveyard, which includes the aisle and the mausoleum of Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane.
The society also helps look after the Skelmorlie Aisle and the Haylie Neolithic chambered cairn, and it runs a programme of talks in the winter months.
