About the museum
Vikingar! is a heritage centre on the seafront at Largs that tells the story of the Vikings in Scotland. Largs is the place where the Battle of Largs was fought in 1263, which ended almost 500 years of Norse power in Scotland, and the visitor attraction uses this setting to present the Viking Age to families and school groups.
A visit is a guided tour led by costumed storytellers. They take visitors into a replica eighth-century Norwegian longhouse, where visitors learn how Vikings lived, what they ate and drank, where they slept and why they left their homelands. Visitors can try on replica helmets and armour and, under supervision, look closely at swords, shields and axes. A section on the gods of Asgard follows, and the tour ends in the Valhalladrome, which shows a fifteen-minute presentation on the Vikings in Scotland, from the first raid on the holy island of Iona in 795 to the Battle of Largs in 1263.
Vikingar! forms part of a leisure complex that also includes a swimming pool, gym, theatre and cafe, and it is run by the charity KA Leisure. The attraction was rated four stars in 2024/25 and offers two-hour educational tours and presentations for schools.
