Carradale Heritage Centre

Community-run heritage centre telling the story of Carradale in Kintyre, from fishing and steamers to forestry and farming.

About the museum

Carradale Heritage Centre is run by Network Carradale, a community-owned business and charity. It occupies a converted building a little inland from the village, which it shares with the Blackbird Tearoom; locally the two together are known as “The Network”. Profits from the heritage centre, the tearoom and other community enterprises are reinvested in the village.

The displays tell the story of Carradale and its surroundings. Fishing is a main theme, with boat models, nets and radio and depth-sounding equipment that show how the industry changed. A wooden wheelhouse from a local fishing boat stands outside. Other displays look at the steamers that brought day visitors to the village around 1900, at the spread of forestry in eastern Kintyre from about 1950 and its effect on local jobs and the landscape, and at farming and weaving, including a traditional hand loom.
