About the museum

The idea of a heritage museum for Arran came from Bess MacMillan of Brodick. The Isle of Arran Museum Association and Museum Trust, both non-profit bodies run by island residents, were formed in 1976, and the museum opened to the public in 1979. Its purpose is to record and preserve Arran’s history, and the objects on display were donated by islanders and people with links to the island.

The museum is on the main road at Rosaburn, just north of Brodick, on the site of a former small school. The present buildings were once a croft and smiddy and include a farmhouse, cottage, bothy, milk house, laundry, stable, coach house and harness room. Displays cover social history, archaeology and geology, among them a reconstructed cottage, the original smiddy, an Early Bronze Age grave and a face reconstruction of Clachaig Man.

About 34 volunteers run the museum. It also holds genealogy and social history archives for researchers, a shop, riverside gardens and Café Rosaburn.
