About the museum

There has been a mill on the Dalgarven site beside the River Garnock since 1203, when it was the waulk mill of Kilwinning Abbey. A grain and flour mill was built in 1614, and in 1622 both mills were bought by the Blair family of Blair, who owned them until 1922, when the Ferguson family took over. A fire in 1869 destroyed the original grain mill, and the mills, barns, byres, stables and cottages that visitors see today date from the rebuilding after the fire.

The mill rises through four floors and is driven by a six metre water wheel, which turns daily when water and volunteers are available. It is one of the oldest and tallest grain mills to survive in Scotland, and its machinery was rescued from a mill in the Scottish Borders. The buildings have kept their original appearance despite their new use.

Today the Dalgarven Mill Trust, a Scottish charity, runs the buildings as the Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume. The granaries on three floors tell the story of the rural community over the last century, including its work, pastimes and dress, and several rooms recreate a Victorian miller's home and an eighteenth-century cottar's bothy.

The costume collection holds about 2,500 items from the 1770s onwards, mostly collected in the local area, and a themed exhibition drawn from it is shown each year.
