About the museum
The Dufftown Whisky Museum was founded in 2002 by Dufftown 2000, a charity and non-profit company set up in 1995 to promote Dufftown as a destination for visitors. The town calls itself the malt whisky capital of Scotland, and the museum tells the story of whisky making in the Speyside area.
Many of the exhibits were given by local distilleries and by HM Customs and Excise. They include illicit stills and other tools and equipment once used to make whisky, which show how whisky was produced in the past and how smugglers worked.
Since 2010 the museum has been based in Conval Street, close to the clock tower in the town centre. Dufftown 2000 also bought the neighbouring building, and it plans to join the two properties into a larger Whisky and Heritage Centre with more space for exhibits and activities. A grant of £30,000 awarded in 2025 supports the renovation, with work planned to continue until 2028.
The museum is run largely by volunteers. Opening times have been irregular at times because of the renovation work and a shortage of volunteers.
