About the museum
Faringdon Museum opened in 2019 in the Old Pump House on Market Place, the first museum run by Faringdon Town Council. It is funded by the town council and Oxfordshire County Council, and its permanent display was assembled and curated by Faith Carpenter. The building dates from the early 19th century and stands over a natural spring; it was first used to pump water to the town and later served as a bank, brewery offices and a First World War hospital before becoming the council offices, information centre and museum.
The permanent display includes a complete timeline of Faringdon's history and cabinets on the town's fossils, ancient residents and wartime life. The fossils come from the unusual Faringdon Sponge Gravels and were provided by the Oxfordshire Geology Trust. A separate presentation looks at the life and work of the eccentric Lord Berners, who lived at Faringdon House, and there is a snapshot of life in the town during the First World War.
The museum is part of the town's information centre in the Pump House and also stages changing temporary exhibitions.
