About the museum

The museum is housed in the Grade II listed County Buildings on Regent Street, a Tudor Gothic building designed by Thomas Penson and built in 1857–1858 as a militia barracks. It later served as a police station and magistrates’ court, and from 1996 it housed Wrexham County Borough Museum, which was refurbished and reopened in 2011.

In 2023 the Welsh Government awarded £5.4 million to the “Museum of Two Halves” project, which combines the local museum with a new Football Museum of Wales. The building was closed for redevelopment in 2024 and reopened on 25 September 2026 with 11 new galleries, a café, a shop and an atrium. The combined name was announced in 2026, in the year that marks 150 years since the Football Association of Wales was founded in Wrexham.

The football galleries draw on the Welsh Football Collection, which contains around 2,000 items and is described as the largest collection of Welsh football memorabilia. The Wrexham galleries cover the town’s history with objects such as Brymbo Man, together with Roman and medieval finds and industrial and modern material.
