About the museum
Fort Hommet is a headland at Vazon Bay on Guernsey’s west coast. Its name comes from the Guernésiais word houmet, meaning a small peninsula. A Victorian fort was built there to defend against French forces, and the German occupying forces added bunkers to it during the Occupation.
The gun casemate is one of 21 “fortress” bunkers built in Guernsey, and four were installed at Fort Hommet. It housed a 10.5 cm coastal defence gun. The casemate has been fully restored and is open to visitors on set afternoons during the summer.
The headland is also home to further bunkers restored by volunteers of Festung Guernsey, including a personnel shelter, an automatic mortar bunker and a shrine made of sea shells in the 1960s, which are opened on special open days. The headland is popular for walking and for spotting birds.
