About the museum
The German Military Underground Hospital (Ho 40) and ammunition store (Ho 7) at La Vassalerie is the largest structural reminder of the German Occupation in the Channel Islands. The maze of tunnels covers about 6,950 square metres under a low hill in the Guernsey countryside and is almost invisible from the surface, apart from the entrances.
Forced workers built the complex, and the German occupying forces used it between 1940 and 1945 as a hospital and an ammunition store. Wartime photographs show a sentry outside the main entrance, wards that could accommodate up to 800 patients and the original kitchen range with its boiler.
Today the tunnels are open to visitors as a museum of the Occupation. The attraction is operated by Gustav Limited in association with Festung Guernsey.
