About the museum
The Gibraltar National Museum opened its dedicated natural history museum at Parson’s Lodge in 2023, as an extension of the main museum at Bomb House Lane. The museum had researched the natural history of the site for over a decade. Parson’s Lodge lies within the Gibraltar National Park, is home to a rich community of plants and animals and is a staging post for birds migrating between Africa and Europe; its coastal position adds marine and intertidal life.
The site stands on a fossil-bearing deposit, the Rosia breccias, which the Reverend John White explored in the late eighteenth century and which later became internationally known for evidence of evolutionary processes. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, open-air and indoor, on Gibraltar’s flora, fauna and conservation, and meet species kept in a rewilding programme, such as Hermann’s tortoises, Iberian water frogs and wild rabbits. The museum also interprets the wider history of Parson’s Lodge and Rosia Bay.
