Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Museum and Heritage Centre

Volunteer-run museum in Greenock’s Victorian fire station, with fire marks and original station features, open on the last Sunday of each month.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum occupies the Old Fire Station in Greenock’s Municipal Buildings, which served as the town’s fire station from 1887 to 1960. After the brigade left, the building stood empty for about 52 years and kept much of its original character, including hose racks, cobbled floors, runs for horses, oak doors and gas lamp fittings.

The Museum and Heritage Centre was opened on 28 June 2012 by Councillor Joe Lowe, convener of the Strathclyde Fire Board. It is run by the volunteers of the Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust, a registered Scottish charity that began life as the Strathclyde Fire Brigade Preservation Group.

The displays include a collection of fire marks that belonged to Firemaster Alexander Nisbet. These were metal emblems that insurance companies fixed to buildings they covered. The volunteers also take preserved appliances and static displays to events around Scotland.
