About the museum
Haddenham Museum is an independent museum run entirely by volunteers and governed by the Haddenham Museum Trust, a registered charity set up in 1998. It sits in the Old Schoolroom behind the Methodist Church on the High Street. The building is itself made of witchert, the local building material of decayed limestone used for many of the village's cottages, barns and walls.
The collection tells the story of Haddenham's change from a farming community into a modern residential village, with finds from Roman times and earlier. Displays cover witchert building, the effect of the 1830 Enclosure Act with before-and-after parish maps, and farming from horse power to steam and diesel, including a model of a Buckinghamshire barge waggon of the type once built in the village.
Other items include memorabilia from both world wars, a note that the local airfield was used to launch gliders in the Second World War, household objects showing how homes have changed, photograph albums, an 1820 parish map and film clips. The Trust also publishes booklets, The Haddenham Chronicles, and members give guided village walks and talks by arrangement.
