About the museum
Hedon Museum opened in 1996 after a local campaign that began in the early 1990s, and it marked its 25th anniversary in 2021. It is run entirely by volunteers and is looked after by the Hedon Museum Society, a registered charity. The museum is accredited and depends on donations and shop sales rather than regular funding.
It is in the Town Hall complex in St Augustine’s Gate, behind the Town Hall, which dates from 1693. Visitors reach it through Watmough’s Arcade and a small alley, and the entrance is signposted on opening days.
The ground floor has permanent displays on the people and businesses of Hedon and other aspects of the town’s life, including photographs of Hedon men who served in the two world wars. The upstairs gallery holds exhibitions that change every few weeks, drawing on the museum’s archive and on work by local people. Visitors can also ask the volunteer on duty to see the Dale Smith photograph collection. A small shop sells souvenirs and local publications.
