About the museum
The museum stands towards the end of the New North Quay in St Helier and is run by Jersey Heritage. It tells the story of the island’s relationship with the sea in an interactive way, from shipbuilding and privateers and pirates to maritime legends, the tides and the design of a ship.
Further displays follow Jersey’s seafood, beaches and seaside entertainment. The “Wave Rider” exhibit celebrates the island’s surfing heritage, from international surf competitions to sustainable surfboard designs. In the harbour behind the museum, historic Jersey boats of the Heritage Fleet, restored by volunteers of the Jersey Heritage boat shop, are on show, each with an interpretation panel on the harbourside.
The Occupation Tapestry Gallery in the same building shows a tapestry woven by islanders, with twelve panels made by the island’s twelve parishes and a thirteenth panel added for the 70th anniversary of Liberation in 2015. It depicts life under German occupation during the Second World War. Every panel has an interactive screen, and recorded first-hand accounts and a film add stories from people who lived through the Occupation.
