About the museum

La Hougue Bie in Grouville is one of the oldest buildings in the world. The Neolithic passage grave under the mound dates from about 4000 to 3500 BC. Its chamber is aligned with the rising sun at the spring and summer equinoxes and was probably a sacred place for rituals and ceremonies.

On top of the mound stands a Christian chapel of the 16th century with wide views over the countryside. The site tells the story of Jersey from Neolithic times to the German Occupation of the Second World War. An exhibition, “Searching for Jersey’s Celts”, deals with the Le Câtillon II hoard, the largest Celtic coin hoard in the world, and asks why about 70,000 coins and pieces of jewellery were buried on the island some 2,000 years ago.

Volunteers built a 20-metre replica Neolithic longhouse over two years, and a fire is tended inside it on certain days. A German command bunker from the Second World War can also be visited; it tells the story of the forced workers brought to Jersey by Organisation Todt. The site is run by Jersey Heritage.
