About the museum
Jersey Museum stands at the Weighbridge in the centre of St Helier, close to the harbour and the Liberation bus station. It is run by Jersey Heritage, the charity that looks after the island’s historic sites and collections.
The ground floor is free to enter. It holds a theatre where the Story of Jersey film is shown and the visitor centre of the aspiring Jersey Island Geopark, which introduces the island’s geology and its igneous origins. Further up, the permanent exhibition “Being Jersey – stories of our Island” uses the museum’s most important objects to show how Jersey became an island and its people islanders.
The museum also shows works of art, among them a portrait of Lillie Langtry by Sir John Everett Millais. A restored, gas-lit Victorian house, part of the museum, tells the story of Dr Charles Ginestet, a Victorian doctor who leaves his home and family and flees to France to begin a new life. Changing exhibitions add new themes every year.
