About the museum
The Vintage Carriages Trust was formed in 1965 by volunteers on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. They wanted to save wooden-bodied railway carriages that were being lost to weather and vandalism and were unsuited to regular use on the preserved lines of the time.
The Trust's museum stands at Ingrow, the first station out of Keighley. It was developed in four phases of building work beginning in 1989 and grew into a display hall and workshop that also serves as the Trust's headquarters. It was long known as the Museum of Rail Travel before being renamed the Carriage Works Museum.
The collection includes nine historic carriages, three small industrial steam locomotives, a railbus and a collection of railway posters, with some items kept at other sites. Several carriages have appeared in screen versions of The Railway Children. Volunteers run the museum and often work on restoration projects that visitors can watch. The museum is an Accredited Museum and works with the Bahamas Locomotive Society and the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway in the Rail Story partnership.
