Freilandmuseum Grassemann
Mountain farm from 1698 in the Fichtelgebirge with an exhibition on forest use and a cultural landscape educational trail – currently closed for renovation.
Over het museum
The Freilandmuseum Grassemann is located in a district of Warmensteinach in the southern Fichtelgebirge and also serves as an information point of the Naturpark Fichtelgebirge (Fichtelgebirge Nature Park), which operates it. The core of the museum is the so-called Schwärzer-Haus, a single-roof farmstead built of log construction in 1698, in which living quarters, stable and barn lie under a single roof ridge – a building type that remained common in the region's harsh upland areas into the 19th century. The building is a listed monument.
The house has undergone few alterations: around 1760, by order of the territorial lord, a black kitchen with a chimney was installed, from which the rear-loading tiled stove in the parlor, which also served for cooking, was heated. In the 19th century a second threshing floor and a litter shed were added. The property never received electricity or running water. The furnishings show the meager daily life of a small mountain farming family who, besides farming, also sought a living in mining, in the forest or as weavers.
In the barn, the exhibition "Menschen und Wälder" provides information on the changes in forest use around Ochsenkopf and Schneeberg. An educational trail with 17 stations opens up the cultural landscape of the Grassemann clearing island and is also accessible when the house is closed. The museum is currently closed until further notice because of renovation work; groups can arrange tours.
