Over het museum
The Hôtel Gaillard was built between 1878 and 1884, near the Plaine Monceau, for the banker and collector Émile Gaillard. The architect Jules Février gave it the appearance of a neo-Renaissance château, inspired by the châteaux of Blois and Gien. The house was to accommodate the family, receptions and a collection of medieval and Renaissance art.
In 1919 the Banque de France bought the hôtel to open a branch there. The architect Alphonse Defrasse adapted it to this use, with a public hall in the inner courtyard and a strongroom in the basement, while keeping much of the original décor. The building is listed as a monument historique. The branch closed in 2006.
In 2011 the Banque de France announced a project for a museum of economics, developed with the Ministry of National Education, Universcience and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. After several years of work, the museum was inaugurated on May 15, 2019 and opened to the public on June 14, 2019.
The permanent route unfolds in six sequences: exchange, actors, markets, instabilities, regulations and treasures. It combines interactive displays, videos, games and archive documents, with content in French, English and Spanish. The strongroom displays old banknotes and coins as well as coin-striking machines.
