Over het museum
The museum owes its existence to Henri Cernuschi, a financier, republican and collector. After a long journey in Asia, he brought back numerous objects, notably Chinese and Japanese bronzes, and had a mansion built near the Parc Monceau to display them. The architect was William Bouwens van der Boijen. On his death in 1896, Cernuschi bequeathed the house and its collections to the City of Paris, and the museum opened to the public in 1898.
Over time the collections grew with paintings, ceramics, jades and art objects from China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The museum is one of the Musées de la Ville de Paris, run by Paris Musées, and bears the “Musée de France” label. It was renovated in 2005, and its permanent display was redesigned and reopened in March 2020.
After around six months of thermal improvement works, the permanent collections welcomed the public again in July 2023. On this occasion the Great Buddha Hall presents a wooden dragon nearly twelve metres long, restored for the anniversary of Henri Cernuschi’s return from Asia. The museum also offers workshops, lectures and temporary exhibitions devoted to Asian art.
