Over het museum
The Pétrusse Casemates date back to the period when the Spanish modernized the medieval fortifications and built large bastions, such as the Beck bastion. In 1673 they reinforced the bastion with the “Ravelin du Pâté.” Vauban gave the fortifications at the Pétrusse their present form; the Austrians built the “Écluse Bourbon” and the large staircase in 1728–1729, and in 1746 the casemates of the “Batterie de la Pétrusse” were created.
After the London Treaty of 1867, the fortress was dismantled, the embrasures were walled up and most of the entrances were closed. Around 17 kilometers of casemates survived. Later they were used, among other things, as a shooting range, for growing mushrooms, for beer concerts and as a warehouse for a champagne company; during both world wars they served as shelters. On July 22, 1933, the first visitors descended with torches.
After extensive safety and restoration work, the casemates reopened with modern scenography and light installations that tell their story. The Old Town with its fortifications has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994.
