Over het museum

The Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart is part of the Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’art (MNAHA), a state cultural institution created in 1946 under the name “Musées de l’État”. The museum presents the country’s national archaeological, historical and art collections. A prologue tells the story of Luxembourg and its collections since 1839, followed by four thematic circuits.

The central building, completed in 1939, soon became too small for the growing permanent displays. The conversion by the architecture firm Christian Bauer & Associés opened in 2002 and increased the exhibition space from 1,900 to 4,300 m². Much of the new galleries lies in the rock beneath the redeveloped Marché-aux-Poissons square; the former Collart-de-Scherf house, a museum since 1922, was completely renovated and linked to the new building by an atrium.

The decorative arts and folk art department found space in several old residential buildings opposite, on Rue Wiltheim. The Aile Wiltheim was fully renovated from 2012 to 2014; it has since offered around 1,500 m² of additional exhibition space and is connected to the main building by a glazed footbridge. The domestic culture exhibition reopened in 2015, and the newly designed coin cabinet rooms followed in December 2015.
