Over het museum
According to tradition, Count Siegfried built a castle on the Bock rock in 963, the starting point of the later city of Luxembourg. In the mid-18th century the Austrians began building the casemates which, as part of the fortress, earned it the nickname “Gibraltar of the North.” The Old Town with its fortifications was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994.
The archaeological crypt opens the tour: it displays remains of the first count’s castle from the 10th century, excavated in 1993. Visitors then enter the keep of the former castle, with views over the valley and the Lower Town. The main gallery is about 110 meters long and seven meters wide; its embrasures were enlarged when the fortress was dismantled in 1867. There was room for about 50 cannons and 1,200 soldiers. Through the Grund battery, where a theatre later operated, and across the castle bridge of 1735, you return to the open air.
