Over het museum

The Lëtzebuerg City Museum sees itself as a society museum dealing with topics that concern the city of Luxembourg and its residents. It collects and researches the city's tangible and intangible heritage, tells its history from the 10th century to the present, and aims to be a place of information and debate. The museum celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026 and is part of the “Musées de la Ville de Luxembourg” together with the Villa Vauban.

The museum occupies an ensemble of four old townhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries, which incorporate medieval elements. An archaeological survey clarified the building history, and its results shaped the design. Striking features are the “floating” glass façade and the panoramic lift, which runs the full height of the eight-storey building (six levels are open to visitors). The architecture is by Conny Lentz (1996); architecture and museography are by Adeline Rispal and Jean-Jacques Raynaud (Repérages).

In the permanent exhibition “The Luxembourg Story”, the 2,200 m² route follows the city's development through four eras and 17 themes, with more than 500 original objects, films, sound recordings, media stations and city models. Since the 25th anniversary of the inscription of “Luxemburg, Altstadt und Festungen” on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the museum also houses the UNESCO Visitor Centre. The museum also includes the former Muerbelsmillen mustard mill in the Pfaffenthal district.
