Over het museum
During the German occupation, Hollerich railway station in Luxembourg was a gathering and departure point for many young men conscripted into the Wehrmacht, and for people resettled for political reasons to eastern Germany. In 1979 the government made the disused building available to the association of forced conscripts, which set up its headquarters there.
From 1992 onward, a working group made up of representatives of the forced conscripts and of political deportees developed the exhibition together with historians, archivists and architects. In December 1995 the memorial was presented to the press, and it has been open to the public since 1996. The exhibition is divided into three parts: occupation and resistance (including a section on the persecution of Jews), the forced conscription of young people, and the resettlement of entire families from September 1942.
The deportation of Jews from Luxembourg did not begin in Hollerich but at other places in the city; it is nevertheless covered in the exhibition. Today the museum focuses above all on the fate of the forcibly conscripted young men and of some 1,300 resettled families.
