Over het museum

Goodwood House in West Sussex has been the home of the Dukes of Richmond and Lennox for over three hundred years. It began as a Jacobean gentleman's residence, built in 1617 in the reign of James I. The 1st Duke of Richmond, a natural son of Charles II and his French mistress Louise de Keroualle, first came to hunt with the fashionable Charlton Hunt and bought the house in 1697. Later dukes enlarged it into the building seen today.

The 'old house' at the back was developed through the 18th century. Its main hall was given a classical style in 1730 by the architect Roger Morris, and a Palladian south wing in Portland stone was added between 1747 and 1750. A balancing north wing by James Wyatt followed in 1771, although part of it was taken down in the late 1960s because of dry rot. The house stands in mature parkland at the centre of an estate of around 11,000 acres with the South Downs behind it.

The family art collection is one of the finest in any English country house. Its origins lie with the Stuart royal family, and the 2nd Duke added portraits and the first English commissions given to Canaletto. The 3rd Duke, who was ambassador in Paris, bought French furniture and was a great patron of Sèvres porcelain. Gobelins tapestries tell the story of Don Quixote. The present Duke restored the rooms and rehung the paintings, and each year the house holds an exhibition on an aspect of Goodwood's history.
