Over het museum
Dunblane Museum was established in 1943, originally to house objects from the medieval cathedral, and these remain on permanent display. Over the following decades the trustees have added to the collection, which now covers many aspects of life in Dunblane and the surrounding area.
The museum stands at The Cross, across the road from Dunblane Cathedral and the historic Leighton Library. Its building is owned by the Society of Friends of Dunblane Cathedral. The last major redevelopment, completed in 2009, added a glass-fronted two-storey exhibition hall overlooking a small garden with a 16th-century well, redesigned the displays, and brought in step-free access including a lift.
The themed rooms range from prehistory, including bronze axe heads and a necklace of cannel coal and jet more than 4,000 years old, to the cathedral, the 1715 Jacobite battle of Sheriffmuir and the two world wars. There is also a large display of communion tokens from many countries and a refreshed display on the tennis careers of Sir Andy Murray and Jamie Murray, who grew up in the town. A short film tells the history of Dunblane.
The museum is a Scottish charity run by trustees and volunteers, who also help visitors trace family history using burial and census records.
