Over het museum
Fountains Hall stands beside the ruins of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s, the abbey estate changed hands several times. In 1597 Sir Stephen Proctor bought it and soon began to build this mansion as his country home in the early seventeenth century. Proctor was a staunch Protestant who held the manorial court here.
Over the following centuries the hall had many uses. It housed a Catholic chapel for the Messenger family, then became part of the Aislabie estate, which created the neighbouring Studley Royal water garden in the eighteenth century. The building was later used as a courthouse, lodgings for estate workers and a farmhouse, and the Vyner family, the last private owners of the estate, were among its inhabitants before the 1960s.
The National Trust cares for the hall as part of the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal estate, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and came into Trust care in the 1980s. Visitors explore the Stone Hall, Minstrel Gallery and Great Chamber with the help of room guides and displays about the people who lived there. A portrait of the Mallory family, owners of Studley Royal, has been restored and returned to the Great Chamber. Part of the building is let as holiday flats.
